The year 2017 was one that gave a new meaning to Fashion innovator Ugo Monye. In that year, he witnessed the breakthrough that put his works in the spotlight through the infamous ”Agbada Ebuka” as it now called when the TV host looked neat and fresh in the Kimono-Agbada put together by Ugo.
The drapery which was worn to the wedding of Banky W and Adesuwa Etomi became the most talked about apparel all over social media which made Monye’s name sought after by many.
Ugo who originally is a graduate of business administration found that he had an eye for fashion. With this knowledge, he began to showcase what he got and gradually grew his clientele.
He started out with women’s clothing but soon went into men’s designs full time. Monye’s crafts are so distinctive that he soon began to work and collaborate with big names. The likes of Jidenna, Joke Silva, Uti Nwachukwu, Alex Ekubo, Ebuka Uchendu etc.
His designs became a high-demand good which was replicated even by mediocre.
Recently, Ugo confirmed that a replica of his designs what used in just released 2021 sequel of the movie Coming 2 America II without his consent. The designer who took to Instagram to share his sentiments on the issue was advised by many to sue.
If he would take any step towards this is yet to be known. However, Ugo is a household name in Nigeria and his works were recognized by Vanguard Allure Women and Fashion Awards as the Wedding Designer of the year 2017.
Monye is a brilliant creative whose name would forever be mentioned for his Agbada styling. It is with great joy that we celebrate this pioneer for taking Nigerian fashion and culture to the international plane.
